Employee Contribution to Full Cost of Family Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance as a Share of Median Household Income (2016)
The employee contribution to the full cost of a family employer-sponsored insurance plan refers to the dollar amount and / or share of the premium that an employee is required to contribute to their employer-based family health insurance coverage.
Median household income is a measure of the income of the exact “middle” household (half of the households in the sample make more, half make less). The figure includes the earnings of all those in a household over the age of 15.
The share of median household income spent on the employee’s share of an family employer-sponsored health insurance plan measures what part of a household’s budget has to be spent to pay their portion of a family employer-sponsored health insurance plan.
The 2016 projections for the employee contribution to the full cost of a family employer-sponsored health insurance plan and the median household income are constructed by applying a compounded annual growth rate based on historical data for each measure spanning ten years from 1997 to 2006.
