Overall Quality of Care
The overall quality of care is a measure adapted from the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ)'s State Snapshots project. It summarizes the performance of state's health care system relative to the national average on on a broad range of quality measures.
A state's performance is measured on a scale of 0 to 100. A score of 0 would mean a state scored below the national average on all quality measures. A score of 100 would mean a state scored above the national average on all quality measures.
A potential 126 quality measures are included in the indicator (some data are not available for every state). Each measures reflects a specific aspect of health care in state relating to the following categories:
- type of care (preventive, acute, chronic)
- setting of care (hospital, ambulatory, nursing home, home health care)
- clinical area of care (cancer, diabetes, heart disease, maternal and child health care, respiratory disease care)
- clinical preventive services (immunizations, screenings, behavioral counseling).
