Overall Quality of Care

The overall quality of care is a measure adapted from the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ)'s State Snapshots project. It summarizes the performance of state's health care system relative to the national average on on a broad range of quality measures.

A state's performance is measured on a scale of 0 to 100. A score of 0 would mean a state scored below the national average on all quality measures. A score of 100 would mean a state scored above the national average on all quality measures.

A potential 126 quality measures are included in the indicator (some data are not available for every state). Each measures reflects a specific aspect of health care in state relating to the following categories:

1. type of care (preventive, acute, chronic)
2. setting of care (hospital, ambulatory, nursing home, home health care)
3. clinical area of care (cancer, diabetes, heart disease, maternal and child health care, respiratory disease care)
4. clinical preventive services (immunizations, screenings, behavioral counseling).
