Diabetes
Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States accounting for more than 75,000 deaths a year. According to the CDC, the direct and indirect costs of diabetes total $174 billion a year.
Individuals who are obese or overweight have been shown to have a higher risk for developing diabetes.
The share of the population with diabetes measures the percent of a state’s adult population diagnosed with the condition.
When not properly managed, diabetes can result in hospital admissions with long-term complications including, heart disease, kidney failure, amputations, and ketoacidosis. These admissions are measured relative to the total population of a state and expressed as the number of admissions with long term complications per 100,000 so that comparisons can be made.
The overall quality of diabetes care is a measure adapted from the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ)'s State Snapshots project. It summarizes the performance of state's health care system relative to national average on a broad range of quality measures specific to the treatment of diabetes.
A state's performance is measured on a scale of 0 to 100. A score of 0 would mean a state scored below the national average on all quality measures. A score of 100 would mean a state scored above the national average on all quality measures.
A potential 8 quality measures are included in the indicator (some data are not available for every state), reflecting such things as avoidable hospitalizations and delivery of appropriate care.
